A few years ago, "online therapy" still felt like a compromise. Today it's simply how a great deal of effective therapy happens—and for many people, it's actually the better fit.
Does it really work?
Yes. A growing body of research finds telehealth therapy can be as effective as in-person work for concerns like anxiety, depression, and trauma. What matters most for outcomes isn't the room you're in—it's the quality of the relationship and the fit between you and your therapist.
Who online therapy suits well
- People with busy schedules, commutes, or caregiving responsibilities.
- Anyone who lives far from specialized providers—telehealth opens up the whole state of California.
- People who feel more comfortable opening up from their own space.
- Those who value privacy and want to skip a waiting room.
Getting the most from your sessions
A little setup goes a long way. Find a private, quiet spot where you won't be interrupted; use headphones for privacy and clearer sound; and give yourself a few minutes before and after to transition.
The goal is the same as in-person work: a space that feels safe enough to be honest.
